What we learned after 30 days of running ChatGPT Ads for car dealers.
Automotive ChatGPT Ads are still new, and that’s important to keep in mind. There isn’t a universal automotive playbook yet. At Green Line Automotive, we’re actively testing and learning with our automotive clients to understand what drives the strongest results in ChatGPT Ads for car dealers.

What we are looking to learn by testing ChatGPT ads for automotive.
When launching a new platform or campaign type, there is no baseline data or best practice to follow. Our main expectation going into testing ChatGPT for our automotive clients is to figure out what works and how we can best use the platform for our clients.
Our goals are to:
- Gain an understanding of how certain conversations generate meaningful engagement.
- How contextual hints should be structured.
- Which creative resonates with our target audience.
- How closely landing pages need to align with the conversation that generated the click.
What we learned in the first 30 days.
Relevance matters more than generic dealership messaging.
One of the biggest lessons so far is that relevance matters. Broad “we sell cars” messaging isn’t nearly as compelling as aligning campaigns with an actual consumer need. ChatGPT Ads are designed to appear alongside relevant conversations. That means thinking about customer questions, needs, and decision points, not just variations of “make + model + dealer.”
Context signals need to reflect actual car shopper needs
Breaking campaigns out around specific models, early research, and comparison behavior gives us a much stronger framework for testing.
For dealership advertising, that means creating campaigns around each stage of the research journey:
- Early research: What SUV should I buy?
- Category research: What are the best compact luxury SUVs?
- Specific vehicle research: Is the BMW X3 reliable?
- Comparison shopping: BMW X3 vs. Audi Q5?
Landing-page relevance matters.
Paid search is often focused on landing consumers as close to inventory as possible. With ChatGPT ads for car dealers, we want to land shoppers on pages that are addressing their questions. Model Research pages can be a better option compared to a search results page.
How we’re structuring automotive ChatGPT ads.
Spend, campaign options, and how ads are displaying continue to evolve over time. As of the time of this blog's publication date, we can run standard text and feed campaigns, while optimizing for Reach, Clicks, or Conversions.
Green Line’s initial approach to ChatGPT Ads for car dealers would look something like this (but we would customize it for your car dealership’s priorities):
Run at least one feed and one standard campaign, each with a minimum monthly spend of $ 1,000.
- This will allow you to get a good baseline on performance and make potential adjustments after a learning period.
Select one or two primary focus vehicles.
- This will allow you to create targeted contextual hints based on each part of the consumer journey.
Should my dealership test ChatGPT Ads now?
If your dealership is well-funded on Paid Search and Paid Social, you could be a candidate for testing into ChatGPT Ads. We don’t recommend immediately shifting large amounts of budget away from paid search. Instead, develop an incremental test budget for this new channel, learn what works, and scale based on what the data tells you.
How dealers can prepare now.
Even if your dealership is not ready to advertise on ChatGPT, you can start preparing for the shift toward conversational search:
- Document the questions customers actually ask your sales team. Those questions can help identify the conversations your dealership should be part of.
- Work with your SEO team on comparison and model-specific content. Build pages that address common questions shoppers have while researching vehicles. Our automotive content marketing is optimized for both SEO/GEO searches.
- Review Google search terms and organic search behavior. They can provide valuable clues about the questions, problems, and comparisons that matter to shoppers.
- Review your inventory feed. Make sure vehicle information, pricing, titles, and images are accurate and useful.
The automotive shopping journey is becoming increasingly fragmented across Google, dealership websites, YouTube, Reddit, social media, and AI platforms like ChatGPT.
The good news is dealers don't need to have everything figured out today. The opportunity right now is to start learning.
By testing now, dealerships can identify which conversations and campaign structures drive engagement, learn what messaging resonates with shoppers, and develop a playbook based on actual performance.
You don’t have to bet the dealership on AI. But you probably don’t want to start learning about it three years after your customers—and your competitors—did.
